CBD and Inflammation

Despite the inconveniences of inflammation, it is a normal, healthy process for the body when we sustain an injury or germs attack us. Inflammation can be in the form of swelling, redness, or pain. When we experience inflammation, we can be sure that our body is acting to heal its injuries. So, inflammation can actually be a healthy response in our bodies.

However, inflammation is the root of many chronic health conditions. It’s also related to autoimmunity diseases. In these instances, inflammation is not a good thing. In fact, it can be destructive, in which the immunity system mistakenly targets the body’s own tissues in type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, which are autoimmune diseases.

Research has recently found a successful role for cannabidiol (CBD) in treating inflammation. CBD is a non-psychotropic cannabinoid constituent of Cannabis sativa. CBD carries potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, translating to anti-inflammatory effects. These effects provide great hope to those suffering from conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, caused by inflammation in the central nervous system.

CBD may also treat oxidative stress-related issues with some success. In fact, the following conditions are affected by oxidative stress and may therefore benefit from CBD: rheumatoid arthritis, types 1 and 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer disease, hypertension, the metabolic syndrome, ischemia-reperfusion injury, depression, and neuropathic pain. Imagine the potential for CBD in treating these myriad conditions.

Finally, long-term chronic inflammation is a serious health concern. It can cause long-term organ damage, resulting in health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, respiratory disease, and joint pain, among many others. CBD may also be a non-pharmaceutical approach in treating these conditions, so the treatment’s potential to improve the lives and conditions of its sufferers in a natural and healthy way warrants special consideration.
